Why I started Words of Wonder

I am so happy to have launched Words of Wonder earlier this month - the support and feedback has been amazing - thank-you.

I thought I would share a little bit about myself and why I decided to create Words of Wonder. Please bear with me I am very new to blogging and regularly posting on social media! So here goes…

My name is Clare, I live in Bristol with my husband Tony, daughter Kitty and cat Marley. I worked as a fashion buyer for many years in Yorkshire but once Kitty was born and we had relocated to Bristol I decided to work part-time and be a hands-on mum as much as possible, which I feel very lucky to have been able to do.

Kitty is now nearly 8 and I felt ready to challenge myself with something new, I had often thought about setting up my own clothing brand but was finally inspired to do it after reading an article about children’s mental health. Currently one in ten children age 5-16 years has a mental health problem but it is still a subject that many find hard to talk about.

I’m not a mental health expert or a perfect mum but I’m trying my best and learning every step of the way. I haven’t got all the answers but by listening and giving Kitty my time I hope I can inspire her to believe in herself and speak more easily about her emotions and feelings.

Through Words of Wonder I hope I can raise awareness about children’s mental health and help parents and children start conversations around some positive words.

I was also passionate about the t-shirts being ethically produced, we use organic cotton t-shirts that have been made in Fairwear certified factories in India - you can read more about Fairwear Foundation on its website. The t-shirts are also climate neutral and manufactured solely using renewable green energy from wind and solar power. I have the t-shirts printed in the UK and have made all packaging as easy to recycle as possible.

I donate 10% of the sale price from every t-shirt sold to Place2Be one of the UK’s leading children’s mental health charities. Place2Be is an amazing charity that helps children cope with emotional challenges to bring them brighter futures.

It’s just me on the day to day running of the business but it wouldn’t have been possible without the support and help from my husband Tony encouraging me to go for it and helping me build the website; my brother Ivan for all the amazing photos on the website; my very talented friend Emma for her great design work; and my gorgeous models – my daughter Kitty, niece Betsy and Arlo my dear friend Chloe’s son.

Hope you like what we are doing and now you know a bit more about Words of Wonder you can order a t-shirt knowing you are helping start a conversation and supporting a great cause – don’t forget to share your photos and use #positivitees.

Love Clare x
