Acting Out -

A big thank-you to Angela Lockhart-Dibble and Jacqui Ham from Acting for our second guest blog post.

'We at Acting Out are huge advocates of drama as a way to grow children’s self- esteem, having been running for nearly 5 years, parents have told us and we can see for ourselves the difference drama has made to children attending our classes and appearing in our shows.

Within our drama classes, we have seen children who were very quiet, slowly finding their voices and enjoying performing, some of the children that have joined our classes are unable to find words to express their feelings, some seem withdrawn and incredibly shy, happily we have watched them develop into brave and outgoing individuals (whilst having a lot of fun!)

Using Drama skills helps to promote mental well-being in children and young people and has been used as a practice to successfully support adults and young people who are experiencing a range of mental health concerns. Participation in arts activities can also result in the development of interpersonal skills, new friendships, a decrease in social isolation and increased involvement by those participating in the activity. Drama allows young people to develop and unleash their imagination and achieve things they might not have believed they could do before.

We encourage social skills by allowing the children to work with different people weekly. We hope our children will learn transferable social skills that they can adapt and use in other parts of their life. They get the opportunity to release the power of their imagination in a safe and creative environment, pushing personal boundaries. We work collaboratively with other agencies to promote community working and to give our children the ability to try out different mediums of performance.

Children who attend our classes have said they love Acting Out because they feel brave after they have performed a piece that they have written and devised, they love the drama games where they can take the lead and invent the rules, they make new friends and they enjoy working with these friends and seeing them perform

We continue to be inspired, entertained and awed by the children who come to Acting Out Drama classes, we are very lucky, and we love what we do'
